ElevenLabs is a text-to-speech and voice AI platform, and the reason it became the default in its category is prosody: its voices place emphasis, pause and breathe in a way that survives long-form listening, which is the exact point where older synthetic speech falls apart. The product is wider than the name suggests. Core text-to-speech turns a script into audio in a large number of languages. Voice cloning builds a voice from a short sample (instant) or a longer consented dataset (professional). Dubbing translates and re-voices existing video while keeping the original speaker's voice. There is a speech-to-text side, a sound-effects generator, and a conversational agents product for building voice interfaces on top of your own logic. Everything is available through an API, which is what makes it infrastructure rather than a toy — a large share of AI narration you hear in apps, audiobooks and YouTube is coming through it. Pricing is credit-based and freemium. Free is $0 for 10,000 credits a month, Starter is $6 for 30,000, Creator is $22 for 121,000, Pro is $99 for 600,000, Scale is $299 for 1.8 million with 3 seats, and Business is $990 for 6 million with 10 seats; Enterprise is custom. One character is roughly one credit on the multilingual v2 model, with newer models discounted to between 0.5 and 1 credit per character. Budget from your script length, not from a vague sense of usage — a 3,000-word article is about 18,000 characters, so the free tier is a demo and Creator is the realistic starting point for regular publishing. Two limitations worth knowing. Commercial use and voice ownership are governed by the plan you are on and the consent you can prove for a cloned voice, so read the terms before you clone anything that is not yours. And output quality degrades with sloppy input: punctuation, paragraph breaks and phonetic spellings for names do most of the work in getting a good read. Against OpenAI's speech models and the big-cloud engines from Google, Amazon and Microsoft, ElevenLabs generally wins on expressiveness and loses on price at very high volume. PlayHT and Murf are the closest direct competitors, with Murf leaning further into a video-editing workflow. Resemble AI is the one to look at when you need on-premise or tightly controlled voice data. Choose it when the audio is the product and it has to sound like a person. Choose a cloud engine when you need cheap, functional narration at scale.
