About Privy
Privy is authentication and embedded-wallet infrastructure for crypto applications, letting a product onboard users with an email address, a phone number, or a social login and provision a self-custodial wallet behind the scenes - so a first-time user never has to install a browser extension or write down a seed phrase.
The problem it solves is the single largest source of drop-off in consumer crypto. A conventional flow asks a new user to install a wallet, fund it, and safeguard a recovery phrase before they have seen any value from the product - a sequence that loses the overwhelming majority of people who start it. Privy inverts the order: sign in the way you would with any other application, and the wallet is created for you, secured through key-sharding techniques so the application never holds the full key and the user retains custody. Users who already have a wallet can connect it instead, so the same integration serves both the crypto-native audience and everyone else.
For a development team the value is that this is genuinely hard infrastructure to build correctly. Key management, recovery flows, transaction signing, session handling, and the security review that all of it demands are a substantial project on their own, and getting them wrong is unrecoverable in a way that a bug in most software is not. Privy ships it as an SDK with a free tier for early-stage projects and usage-based pricing as an application grows.
The comparison set is instructive. Dynamic and Web3Auth solve a similar problem with different trade-offs around customisation and key architecture. Magic pioneered email-based wallet login and is strong on simplicity. Thirdweb bundles wallets into a much broader contract and infrastructure toolkit. Coinbase and WalletConnect solve connection rather than creation - they assume the user already has a wallet, which is exactly the assumption Privy exists to remove. Alchemy approaches it from the account-abstraction side, which is why founders frequently evaluate the two together.
Choose Privy when your users are mainstream consumers rather than crypto natives, when onboarding conversion is the metric you are trying to move, and when you want self-custody without asking users to understand what that means. It is less compelling for products whose audience already lives in a wallet, where a simple connect flow is sufficient.
