About Intercom

Intercom is an AI-first customer service platform that pairs Fin, its AI support agent, with a full helpdesk - live chat, a ticketing system, a help centre, and proactive outbound messaging - so that a large share of incoming questions are resolved before a human ever opens them. The company effectively created the business messenger category: the chat bubble in the corner of a SaaS product is an Intercom idea that the rest of the industry copied. Its more recent bet is that support is being rewritten by AI, and it has restructured the product around that. Fin reads your help centre, past conversations, and connected documentation, answers customers directly, and hands off to a human with full context when it cannot resolve something. The important design decision is that resolution, not deflection, is the unit of success - the goal is a customer who got an answer, not a customer who gave up. That shows in the pricing model, which is unusual and worth understanding before you commit. Alongside per-seat pricing for the helpdesk, Fin is charged per resolution: you pay when the AI actually resolves a conversation. That aligns the vendor with the outcome, but it also means costs scale with support volume rather than with headcount, which can be either much cheaper or considerably more expensive than a traditional seat-based tool depending on your ticket mix. Model it against your real volumes rather than your team size. There is a free trial rather than a free tier. For a startup, the practical trade is between capability and cost. Intercom is the most complete product in the category and the AI is genuinely strong, but it is priced for companies where support is a real cost centre. Zendesk is the enterprise-ticketing alternative with deeper workflow and reporting but a heavier feel. Crisp and Chatwoot are far cheaper, and Chatwoot is open-source and self-hostable if data control matters more than polish. Front is the better shape for teams whose support happens in shared email inboxes rather than in-app chat. Help Scout sits in between, aimed at teams that want simplicity over configurability. Choose Intercom when support volume is high enough that automated resolution pays for itself, when your customers are inside a product rather than in an inbox, and when you want the help centre, the messenger, and the AI agent to be one system rather than three integrations.
