Directus

Directus wraps any existing SQL database in an instant REST and GraphQL API plus a polished admin application - without requiring you to migrate your data, restructure your schema, or hand ownership of it to the tool. That is the whole architectural argument, and it is genuinely different from how most headless CMS products work. A typical CMS owns its own database and defines its own schema, so adopting it means moving your content into its world and accepting whatever shape it imposes. Directus inverts that: you point it at a Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, MS SQL, Oracle, or CockroachDB database - existing or new - and it introspects the tables you already have and generates the API and the editing interface on top of them. Your data stays in plain SQL tables that any other system can read. If you remove Directus tomorrow, your database is untouched and still perfectly usable, which makes it one of the few tools in this category with an honest exit path. In practice teams use it two ways: as a headless CMS for websites and applications, and as an internal admin panel over an operational database - the thing every company eventually builds by hand and regrets maintaining. The interface layer is configurable enough that non-technical staff can work in it, with granular role-based permissions, flows for automation, and file and asset management included. The licensing deserves attention if you are evaluating it commercially. Directus is source-available under the Business Source License rather than a classic open-source licence, with terms that keep it free for smaller companies and require a commercial licence above a revenue threshold. The code converts to an open licence after a set period. Read the current terms against your own revenue before you build on it - this is a deliberate, defensible model, but it is not the same as MIT. Compared with Strapi, Directus is stronger when the database already exists and weaker if you want an opinionated Node-based CMS you extend in JavaScript. Compared with Payload, it is framework-agnostic where Payload is built for Next.js. Compared with Contentful or Sanity, you trade a managed cloud and a CDN for full control of your data and no per-record pricing. Choose it when the database is the source of truth and you want an API and an admin UI over it, not a new home for your content.
