Referral programs, recommendation networks where publications send each other subscribers, paid acquisition tracking, SEO-friendly hosted web archives, and a built-in ad network are all part of the platform. That last one matters more than it sounds: the single hardest part of running a newsletter as a business is selling sponsorships, and beehiiv will match publications with advertisers rather than leaving a writer to cold-email brands. Monetisation runs on two tracks - paid subscriptions with Stripe, and ad revenue - and the platform does not take a percentage of subscription revenue on paid plans, which is a meaningful difference from Substack's model. Choose beehiiv when the newsletter is the business - when you intend to grow the list deliberately, sell sponsorships, and eventually run it as a media property. It is over-specified for a founder who just wants to email their users occasionally, and under-specified for a company that needs lifecycle email tied to product events. The honest caveat is portability: as with any hosted newsletter platform, you own the list but not the infrastructure, so evaluate the export path before you build a business on top of it.
